Description:
Chinese export porcelain cup decorated in Famille rose palette of black, iron red, rose, turquoise, yellow, green, and gilding. Elaborate painted grisaille seagrass at bottom of cup with scattered rose flower blossoms with yellow, green, and rose centers and turquoise and green leaves. One large spray of green leaves and rose flower blossoms reaching to the top of cup. Partially obscured grisaille carp and two long iron red carp painted swimming from handle. Carp decoration was a popular subject for Chinese export porcelain made for the Continental market; the carp symbolized wealth and profit as the word for carp "li" sounds like the word for profit. It also represents the scholar's struggle for knowledge and success in passing examinations. Blossoming trailing gilt vine outlined in red border at lip under parallel black bands. Rim edged in brownish underglaze enamel.

Subjects:
Pottery; Enamel and enameling; glaze (coating by location); polychrome; Porcelain
