Description:
Chinese export porcelain octagonal plate with chamfered corners decorated in the Famille rose palette of rose, iron red, black, turquoise, blue, yellow, green, and gilding. The center well is decorated with the arms of Martin and a band of gilt and iron red double chain around the edge; the rim has four sprays of rose, green, blue, and yellow flowers on leafy branches. The Martin family and its descendants lived in Worcestershire and London. This service was probably ordered in the mid-eighteenth century by one of the sons of Matthew Martin, the Director of the East India Company in the 1720's. His sons died without heirs.
