Description:
Chinese export porcelain round plate in the Famille rose palette of blue, iron red, green, yellow, white, rose, black, and gilding. The plate has a center decoration of a rose and white carp, three iron red and gilt carp, and one brown and black carp surrounded by green and blue vegetation with white coral and scattered iron red and green blossoms. Carp decoration was a popular subject for Chinese export porcelain made for the Continental market; the carp symbolized wealth and profit as the word for carp "li" sounds like the word for profit. It also represents the scholar's struggle for knowledge and success in passing examinations. Border decoration has four floral sprays with iron red peonies, gilt details, gilt flowers with iron red details, green and blue leaves, and pink and white pomegranates. There is brownish underglaze enamel on the rim.
