Description:
English press molded slipware baking dish covered with a brown lead glaze and decorated with a rooster design. This large press molded dish with slip-trailed decoration onto a brown body is of a type produced in some quantity in the North-east of England, especially Newcastle upon Tyne, formerly in Northumberland. It probably dates to the first half of the 19th century, although some examples were produced there in the late 18th century. These Newcastle wares were often decorated with a series of graduated commas that formed simple borders and patterns on the bottoms of interiors. Some examples have a dividing wall cutting across the center of a piece. Both shapes were consumed locally and shipped to other markets.

Subjects:
Pottery; glaze (coating by location)
