Description:
Chinese export porcelain covered, goblet-shaped urn with handles on a cylindrical, molded stem and base, decorated in the Famille rose palette in pink, iron red, greens, orange, purple, and gilding. This European-based shape, which is typical of the style being sent to England in the late 18th century, is an unusual ornamental form in Chinese export porcelain; the cover seems to reflect repousse silverwork. Such large double-handled cups are often called 'loving cups', and were often passed around at banquets for communal drinking. The molded and stepped cover has a S-shaped twig finial, over a floral band, and two bands of tight petal molding in purple, green and gold, and orange and gilding. The rim has a wavy band with dots and flower; over two vases with large floral bouquets and scattered floral sprays; and lotus-petal molding around the base of the bowl. The stem and flared round base each have two tight petal molding bands in orange or purple. The two ear-shaped twig handles have gilding on the sides.
