According to George Sheldon, John Sheldon (1658-c.1773), son of Isaac Sheldon (b.c.1629-1708), was the first Sheldon to settle in Deerfield. John married Hannah Stebbins (1664-1704), the daughter of John Stebbins of Northampton in 1679; they had several children including Ebenezer Sheldon (1691-1774) who married Thankful Barnard (1694-1746) in 1714. Their son, Remembrance (1717--1787), married Mehitable Burke, and they had a son, Cephas (b.c.1753-1756), who settled in Vermont and may be the "Cephas" mentioned in the inscription, and a son, Remembrance (1760-1809) who moved to Williamstown, Mass. John Sheldon also had a son, Remembrance (b.1693), who was one of the 1704 captives who was redeemed by his father in 1706, and later moved with his father to Hartford, Conn., where Remembrance married Hannah Drake of Windsor, Conn., in 1718/19. They had a son, Remembrance (b.c.1728) who married Sarah Eggleston.
