Description:
Chinese export porcelain teacup decorated in the Famille rose palette of green, iron red, black, rose, purple, blue, white and gilding with painted sprays of iron red mallows and roses with green leaves. The cup, which was probably part of a marriage service made for the Western market. One side is decorated with an ermine-lined and curtained escutcheon initialled "JEL." The other has two white birds on the top of the shield; the two birds often found on such services may be associated with the Chinese symbol of a pair of mandarin ducks signifying fidelity. The interior rim has a blue band bordered in gilt with gilt stars.
