Description:
"Cromwell" side chair in maple, painted Indian red, with an upholstered seat and back of old red linsey-woolsey material attached with brass tacks. These chairs were based on the English farthingale chairs of the early seventeenth century and were usually covered with turkey work or leather. The back supports, front legs, and front stretcher have very good ball-and-disc turnings, more typical of the Boston area than country work. The side and back stretchers and legs are plain.

Subjects:
Textile fabrics; Brass
