Description:
English pearlware mug decorated in "Prattware" colors, after the potter, William Pratt, who developed the palette at his factory in Lane Delph, Staffordshire. These are the typical range of colors available for underglaze painted decoration, a palette limited to colors derived from metallic oxides that could withstand the heat of the glaze firing. The straight-sided body is decorated with the inscription "Sam Smith. 1798" and two floral sprays in blue, yellow, green, and brown. There is a brown and orange ring under the rim, and a brown ring around the bottom quarter; the apllied strap handle is decorated with a series of brown dots.

Subjects:
Pottery; glaze (coating by location)
