Description:
Pictorial embroidery polychrome silk slips on tan, satin-weave silk ground. Two central couples are depicted, a dressed man and woman and Adam and Eve. Adam and Eve are depicted flanking a tree with the serpent coiled around the trunk are at the lower center of the composition. Around them are a man and woman, a winged angel, and a wide range of animals including griffins, tiger, rabbit, squirrel, birds and insects, and exotic flowers.

Label Text:
Celebrating the Fiber Arts 2008: Adam and Eve are the main subjects set into a ‘Garden of Eden’ surrounded by flora and fauna with recognizable flowers and animals as well as a shepherd and shepherdess. The snake and the apple tree are missing. The richness and variety of stitches and the organization in the then current style of horror vacui (fear of empty spaces) encouraged the inclusion of tiny insects and metallic sequins to fill the space. In England this would have been accomplished by a young woman as part of her needlework education, but it is likely that this work is from the Iberian Peninsula and was made by professionals.

Subjects:
Textile fabrics; Embroidery; Linen; polychrome; Silk
