Description: Oil painting by George Morland (1763-1804) depicting a family scene of a husband smoking his pipe with a young child leaning at this knee and his wife holding a baby in front of their cottage with a tall building in the background, maybe the local manor house. Morland, the son of an artist, was exhibiting chalk drawings at the Royal Academy in 1773 at the age of 10. His paintings of animals and the everyday life of his time were very popular, and his colored engravings were found in many houses throughout England. However, he was extremely extravagant in his lifestyle and moved from from one hiding place to another to escape his creditors. He died early at the age of 41, still painting desperately in an effort to meet his obligations.
