Description: Needlework coat of arms in silk embroidery on a silk ground on a linen facing, in a diamond-shaped black wooden frame embellished with brass decoration. The center coat of arms has a deer's head over a shield shape with three stars on a gold metallic background; over scrolls, and gold metallic shaped coil. The shield has scrolling foliage in yellow, red, orange, blue, white and brown. Based on a 2010 article by Angela Duckwall, designs for these kinds of embroidered coats of arms from Boston appear ot have been drawn out on the fabric with gum arabic and white lead, including instructions for color placement, before being embroidered.
Label Text: Celebrating the Fiber Arts 2008: This rich and impressive coat-of-arms was inspired by the designs of John and Samuel Gore who produced the “Gore Roll of Arms” with colorful acanthus leaf forms and rich metallic devices. These designs were widely used by many of the teachers in Boston during the decades just prior to the American revolution.
