Description:
English delft plate decorated in blue, purple, and yellow. The well has a chinoiserie garden scene with a Chinese figure holding a fan and seated under the arching, leafy branch of a bamboo tree. A leafy mound is to her right. The rim has a three panels of trellis diaper decoration alternating with three shaped reserves of twin bamboo branches, each with three leaves. The Bristol attribution is based on the number of fragments with this design found at the Water Lane Pottery at Temple Back in Bristol. This pattern is most commonly found in blue, but is also known in purple with touches of other colors such as yellow such as this example. English delft plates with similar bamboo leaves are known dated 1739 and 1742.
