Description:
Large rectangular dish with a brown slipware honeycomb pattern on the front, with dark black edge and back. This slipware dish is quite convincing on the surface; however, a closer look reveals that the body is very thick and heavy. The body of the dish is red in tone, not the typical light buff colored body. The black surface of the dish has been coated with a layer of black to resemble the patina of caked grease and soot. The lead glaze has thickly pooled on the surface and the slip was so thick that it "alligatored" in places. The surface of the glaze looks like someone deliberately scratched the surface to resemble authentic wear marks. Many of the scratches are of the same direction and depth.

Subjects:
Pottery; glaze (coating by location)
