Description: Scottish oval pearlware plaque with Pratt colors (high temperature underglaze oxide colors) and molded in relief depicting a half-length figure of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) in uniform, flanked with a three-masted sailing ship and an anchor, in pink, blue, yellow, green, and black; his blue coat has yellow decorations, (In 1797, Nelson distinguished himself while in command of HMS Captain at the Battle of Cape St Vincent. Shortly after the battle, Nelson took part in the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where his attack was defeated and he was badly wounded, losing his right arm) His sashes are colored pink and purple and he is shown with black hair and red cheeks. To the left, a ship under sail and on the right an anchor painted black. The plaque has a blue rope border with an oak leaf border inside. A single hole has been pierced at the top for suspension. The portrait of Nelson is thought to be derived from the Flaxman statue of Nelson in St. Paul's Cathedral, which suggests it was probably made sometime after Trafalgar, perhaps between 1815 and 1820. Similar plaques with bright colors were produced in Portobello, Scotland.
