Description: English delft circular mug decorated in dark blue, with a strap handle with a scroll base terminal. Mugs served all types of alcoholic beverages and were prone to rough use and breakage. Given the fragility of delftware, few mugs survive. This example is unusually small and held a diminutive quantity of drink. The mug's decorative elements of a bird on the opposite side of the handle, sponged trees, and horizontal dashes on its strap handle relate to a posset pot at Colonial Williamsburg. In addition, the mug's strong pinkish colored glaze corresponds to the Colonial Williamsburg example, which has been ascribed to London on the basis of fragments found at Vauxhall. There are also double blue bands surrounding the scene on the top and bottom edges of the mug. According to Jonathan Horne, 1/23/95, ring handles are typical of Dutch mugs, while English delft mugs usually have strap handles.
