Description:
One of a set of three scalloped-edged plates from a set of Dutch-decorated, English creamware plates depicting scenes from the "Prodigal Son" and decorated with ornate sgraffito work in brown, red, yellow, green, and black. These plates might have been made at Turner's of Lane End, Staffordshire, or in Leeds, Yorkshire, and then exported to Holland where they were decorated by Dutch enamellers. Each plate is inscribed with a phrase: "DEN. VEHLOOREN ZOON" or "The Prodigal Son Receives his Patrimony"; "ZYN AFSCHEID" or "The Prodigal Son Taking Leave"; and "DE MAALTEYD" or "The Prodigal Son Feasted on his Return" and "WYN" on the wine bottle in front of the table.
