Description:
English delft dish decorated in blue, red, yellow, and green. The central well has a willow tree with blue leaves standing on a thick trunk with wavy side and red hatched lines and dots. The trunk is intersected by a large multi-petaled red, yellow, and green flower over three scratched green leaves. There are also a flying insect and 3 rec "+"'s with green dots. The rim has 4 scrolling floral sprigs, encircled with blue bands. The dish has a sloping rim and large flat well. The back of the dish has four blue "X"s alternating with four "II"s - otherwise known as naughts and crosses. It is a regional characteristics of Bristol delftware that pieces were often decorated with naughts and crosses on the reverse. The meaning of this decoration is unknown. The meaning of this decoration is unknown. An identically decorated plate was sold at Bonhams Skinners, Marlborough, MA, 14 August 2023, lot 1418, marked "MH/1754."
