Description:
Man's tarpaulin hat made from oilcloth, a water-repellant material favored by early and mid 19th-century fisherman. In this example, the hat may be made from straw or palm leaf that has been covered with oilcloth (linen or silk painted black). Three-inch deep brim all around. Original accession information suggests it was owned by a deacon from Dresden, Maine (north of Bath and Wiscasset).
