Description:
Butter tub part of a butter tub and stand set. Chinese export porcelain butter tub and stand decorated in blue, pink, green, brown, orange, and gilding with a man and woman embrasing in an wooded area with a cherub (Cupid?) flying overhead holding a torch and stringing floral wreathes The scene is based on an engraving by N. Le Mire, after an illustration done by Charles Eisen (1720-1778) for "Zelis au Bain," a poem by Alexandre-Frederic-Jacques Masson de Pezay (1741-1777), published in 1763. This decoration is also found without the cherub.
