Description: Chinese export porcelain octagonal plate with chamfered corners, decorated in the Famille rose palette in purple, yellow, white, rose, green, iron red, blue, black, and gilding. The well has the coat of arms of Mercer, :Per fess or and argent, on a fess gules (painted azure) between in chief three crosses pattee of the last in in base a mullet of six (seven) points azure (gules) three bezants; a crest, "A stork's head holding a serpent"; and Latin inscriptions above the shield "thegi.pcpoul" ('The grit poul 'or 'Ye great pule') and "Cruxcm.Risti:Nostra.Corona" below the shield. The family descended from John Mercer who was the provost of Perth and Ambassador to England and France in 1376. This service may have been made for one of the three sons of Lawrence Mercer D.D., of Pitteuchar: Lt.-Col. James killed defending Fort Oswego in 1756; William (b.1717) who married Elizabeth Swan in 1746 with whom he had eight sons, and was Sheriff Subsitute of Perth. The rim is decorated with alternating floral sprays, exotic birds, and shell cartouches; the well is encircled by an iron-red, gilt-edged double chain with diamonds.
