Description:
Wool or great wheel used for spinning wool fibers into yarn in preparation for weaving. This example has one maiden instead of two. This example as a turned wheel hub and a metal (iron) axel. The legs on this example may suggest a date closer to c.1775. No wedge on post, single post and beam (and/or fan?) tensioning system. Table looks sawed and planed. The rim of the wheel (at CB) itself is fairly wide, and consists of two halves nailed together. The 2289 wheel at CD is on a base with hand-forged, rose-head nails holding the rim to the spokes. The wheel (at Cowles) may be one of the earliest owned by the museum, indicated by its relative wide width.
