Description:
Needlework picture done in silk and wool embroidery in tent, short, long, canvaswork, and French knot stitches on a linen ground. The scene depicts a man in a long blue coat standing on a branch picking a pear and handing it down to a woman holding up a basket on the right, and another woman in a yellow dress picking grapes with a fruit basket at her feet on the left. The rest of the scene is densely filled with a landscape and sky. This kind of pictorial needlework, depicting a pastoral scene with figures, flora and fauna, is indicative of earlier English examples that were later created in the American colonies by amateur women and teachers instructing young girls. Often, these kinds of scenes in America are attributed to the Boston area, although it can be difficult to determine English or American origins in some surviving pieces. This anonymous example may be cut down from a larger work.
