Description:
Silver spectacles in a case made of morrocan red leather and trimmed in green leather, oval end on one side and a leather tab on the other side, which are marked "E HUGHES" on the right bow for Edmund Hughes (1781-1852). The old ink note inside of case reads: "Edmund Hughes. learned trade in Hampton, CT. Shop there in 1804- 1806 in Middletown, CT. w. John Ward later, w. Jonathan Bliss, w. Julius Francis - 1807-9. Made silver watch cases." After apprenticed to Eleazer Baker in Ashford, Connecticut, from circa 1793 to 1800, Hughes worked as a silversmith in Hampton from 1800 to 1804; in partnership with John Ward in Middletown as Ward & Hughes from circa 1805 to 1806; with Jonathan Bliss in Middletown CT as Hughes & Bliss in 1806; with Julius Chauncy Francis in Middletown as Hughes & Francis from 1807 to 1809; and by himself in Middletown from 1810 to 1827.
