Description: Set of six side chairs with a molded shield-shaped back with a pointed base, which is based on a Hepplewhite pattern. Shield-back or vase-back (the period term) designs appeared both in Hepplewhite's "Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide" first published in 1788, and Sheraton's "The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book" published in four volumes (1791–1794); these designs were immediately picked up in America where they were made in most major cabinetmaking centers. These backs have three slats radiating form a carved crescent base: the a center slat has bellflower and acanthus carving flaring into five radiates and supporting carved drapery, flanked by the two bowed end slats. The trapezoidal seat is covered in black over-the rail, held in place with two rows of brass nails - a swag pattern over a straight line. The two front legs are tapered and molded; the flared back legs and four stretchers are plain.
