Description: Flintlock rifle stamped "H. PRATT" for Henry Pratt (1790-1880), the brother of gunsmiths, Alvan Pratt (1790-1877) and Nathanial Pratt (see 2003.37.2). Making flintlock and percussion rifles, Henry worked in Roxbury from 1832-1861 and in Boston from 1861-1875. The rifle is approximately .50 caliber; has an octagonal steel barrel with seven grooves and seven lands; elaborate brass inlays and engravings; English lock with a tulip mark; brass patch box with an opening button on the top of the butt plate; ranrod, flint, and leather flint pad; and full tiger maple stock.
