Description:
Pewter porringer with a handle pierced with hearts and quatrefoil, made by Samuel Danforth (1774-1816) of Hartford, Connecticut, where he worked from December, 1795, until his death in 1816 producing his eagle-marked wares. Samuel was the youngest son of Thomas Jr. (1731-1782) of Middletown, Conn., who began the metalworking dynasty that put Danforth pewter on thousands of American tables. Samuel was a very successful pewterer, whose estate was valued at over $11,000 net when he died; however, the quality of his output was uneven. The pierced handle has the touchmark: Stars over an eagle with a striped shield superimposed on the body and a cluster of arrows and olive branch in its talons in a circle, surrounded by "SAMUEL DANFORTH". Danforth stamped his porringers on the top of the handle after 1790.
