Description: White felspathic stoneware oval teapot with a hinged cover, molded and applied relief decoration and blue trim, and stamped on the base "S & Co./ No. 1", possibly for the Sowter and Company pottery (1800-late 1820s) of Mexborough, Yorkshire. The domed cover has a finial with a layered-petal center flanked by two rams' horns with the base outlined in blue over a band of vertical acanthus leaves; and is hinged through the gallery with a steel pin with flower-shaped terminals. The blue and scalloped-edged gallery has a band of acanthus leaf tops alternating with bell flowers over a plain narrow band; over a band of three-part leaves extending into the sloped shoulder; over a shaped blue band following the shape of the fluted body, over an elaborate band of applied sprig molding with flowers, scrolling acanthus leaves, and swags with fruit or berries; over a blue band and a row of vertical acanthus leaves around the blue-edged shaped flat base. The curved, ribbed spout, which extends from the mid-point of the body, has a blue-edged rim; the blue-edged shaped and scrolled handle has an acanthus leaf and furl on the top.
