Description:
Dark-brown leather, waist cartridge box and a wide belt with a buckle, bayonet frog, and a narrow shoulder strap with buckle. There is a metal pick and brush holder (brush fibers missing) on chains suspended from the belt. The box has a small flap stitched to the front piece of the box; and light decorative stitching on each end; the interior has a wood block drilled with 24 round holes for holding cartridges. Initially, cartridges were carried loose in these boxes; later wooden inserts bored with holes, each large enough to carry a single cartridge, were added, which both prevented the cartridges from breaking and added additional protection from the weather. The number of holes varied, but were usually from 20-30 so that the box might weigh between 5-6 pounds.
