This carving appears to represent a sailor in a Union uniform. The basic naval equipment and rig as listed in 1864 regulations of the U.S. Navy included: blue wool jumper, blue wool trousers, flat hat, black silk neckerchief, brogans, wool socks, Ames model cutlass with scabbard, pistol box, black holster, and 1861 model Colt Navy pistol. Shipboard life for both the Union and Confederate navies included regulated activity as well as hours of relaxation and probable boredom, and it is possible that a sailor carved this figure when he was not on duty.
