Description: eagle head turned toward proper right with wings on either side, carved in high relief, blue eye, red tongue, red white a blue design at base of neck into proper left wing
Label Text: The son of a carpenter and boat builder from Kittery Point, Maine, John Bellamy studied art in Boston and New York and was apprenticed to a Boston ship carver. He is best known, however, for his many patriotic eagle carvings, which adopt the basic format seen here: outspread, stylized wings and a more sculpturally realized head with a curved beak and fierce expression. These were made for domestic display, and larger carvings were made for architectural use.
