Description:
horse seen from front, proper right leg raised, head turned slightly toward proper right

Label Text:
Label text for ARH 240 French and Italian Drawings Renaissance through Romanticism, written by Maddy Barker, class of 2015:

This drawing remains a mystery: who drew it, and for what purpose? The outlines of the horse, traced on the back (verso) as well as the front (recto) of the sheet, are pricked for transfer, possibly for a tapestry. The paper in this case may provide the best index of when the work was made. The cool, white paper bears a watermark—a circle with a three-rung ladder—that has been found on Italian paper from 1495 to 1524.
