Label text for ARH 240 French and Italian Drawings Renaissance through Romanticism, written by Amanda Manocherian, class of 2015:

Both the artists within the Tiepolo family who created this work, and the original purpose of this mysterious drawing, remain unknown. Giandomenico, the eldest son of Giambattista, spent his formative years as an apprentice in his father’s studio copying his father’s works and assisting him with his commissions. Consequently, Giandomenico and Giambattista often exhibit similar stylistic tendencies which make it difficult to determine which one of them specifically executed this drawing. Although this drawing does not display the grandiloquence of a typical Giambattista composition, it most certainly exhibits his characteristically sharp contrast between light and shadow and the dramatic presence of physical form created by sweeping, dynamic brush strokes within the figure.
