Description: nude man; studey from a castl; male; sculpture
Label Text: Label text for ARH 240 French and Italian Drawings Renaissance through Romanticism, written by Maggie Hoot, class of 2016:
Throughout his career, Prud’hon drew many male and female nudes, known as academies, which were all made on similar-sized blue paper with black and white chalks. Those works depicted energetic postures and intricate shading and detail. In comparison, this drawing is simple and contemplative in character. The unfinished quality of the work, with its large empty spaces, accentuates the deep shadows and overall air of uncertainty. Intriguingly, the pieced edge around the work must have been added after it was drawn (evident by the sudden break in shading of the extended foot).
