Label Text: The plate for Dors mon amour, Separation for Plate XVII, from Cirque de l'étoile filante, Proof One, was most likely the first plate executed and would have served as the template for any subsequent plates.
The scarcity of the fine etching lines (which can be seen near the elbow along the back of the hand, and near the head and neck areas) suggest that they might be under-drawing. The majority of this under-drawing is covered over by the large areas of aquatint.
The dark lines and wash-like aquatint areas are created by applying a dissolved rosin solution by brush. The rosin-covered plate would then be dipped in acid, and the process repeated with various types of rosin to achieve contrast (fine rosin particles create a lighter tone and coarser rosin particles create a darker tone).
Roulette scratches can be seen in the ribbing of the bodice and near the shoulder.
