Description: city street, bus at left, man walking near trash filled curb, woman holding hat box at mid right and people walking on sidewalk at right image
Label Text: Garry Winogrand rejected the label of "street photographer," although much of his work consists of images of people in public places. Winogrand's focus, however, was not so much on the details of the site, but on the theatrical moments in life enacted in public, particularly in large-scale cities, which are often seen as being composed of anonymous crowds.
Jeffrey Fraenkel, Winogrand's longtime San Francisco dealer, considered New York City "the only place with a consistent level of energy remotely comparable to Winogrand's own, and the city's visual freneticism often allowed him to scatter several small but remarkable dramas throughout a single frame."
