Label Text: Sculptor Elie Nadelman played an important role in the development of modern art in Europe. An exhibition of his work in Paris in 1904 was a major influence on artists such as Picasso, Brancusi and Modigliani. When Nadelman emigrated to New York in 1914, he showcased work that introduced modern European art concepts to American artists and audiences.
"Resting Stag" is a poetic rendition of nature in balance. It is also a study in abstract form, in which Nadelman has exaggerated the contrasts between the round, full curves of the body and the thin, angular lines of the legs and antlers.
"The subject of any work of art for me is nothing but a pretext for creating significant forms, relations of forms which create a new life that has nothing to do with life in nature, a life from which art is born, and from which spring style an unity." Elie Nadelman
