Label Text:
This image is a portrait of Jim Jones (1931-1978), cult leader and founder of the Peoples Temple, in his office in San Francisco, CA. In 1978 Jones and over 900 of his followers committed suicide by drinking poisoned Kool-Aid, at Jones's instructions, at their compound, Jonestown, in Guyana. According to the photographer Janet Fries: "[Jones] was a very stiff person who took and held odd positions. He sat this way for some time while I photographed him."
