wooden building with ornamental wooden overhang; outdoors; open door; pump; architecture

Label Text:
In 1931, Walker Evans was hired by the writer and New York City cultural leader Lincoln Kirstein to photograph examples of Victorian architecture throughout New England. The book project that was planned, however, was never published. This image of the decorative trim on the architectural canopy over a water pump plays the bright light and graphic shadows against the delicate carving of the woodwork.

Subjects:
Photographic gelatin
