Label Text: In the summer of 1883, on the advice of the artist R. Swain Gifford, the Tryons rented a house in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, near New Bedford. Tryon fell in love with the town, the surrounding countryside, and the views of the Apponagansett River and Buzzard's Bay. The Tryons returned to South Dartmouth each summer, building a house there in 1887. Gradually they extended their stays so that the "summer" season lasted from April to November (winters were spent in New York). The landscape reminded Tryon of France. Indeed, this painting was for many years called "Village Scene in France," but it is clearly of Middle Street in South Dartmouth.
