Label Text:
This painting was executed by John Singer Sargent, one of the most well-known American artists of the late 19th century, but it was also something of a mystery for a time. The dining room was believed to refer to any of three possible places John Singer Sargent called home. Recent research has shown that this painting depicts Sargent’s home in Chelsea, England. In My Dining Room, Sargent has employed a style influenced by the French Impressionists with whom he associated, and he shows a remarkable skill in depicting objects clearly with a few broad, painterly brushstrokes. His entire handsome dining room is shown, with his fine china in the cupboard, paintings hanging on the walls, and the table set for himself and his guests. Sargent has, in a way, allowed the viewer to enter his home, and preserved both his painterly style and his eye for proper interior design.
