Label Text:
While Benjamin Champney was most well-known in his day for sweeping landscape paintings of the White Mountains of New Hampshire, he was also a noted painter of still-lives, especially those depicting flowers. In this still-life of hydrangeas, he shows these flowers in a darkened space. This very traditional technique of using a dark background in a still-life emphasizes the natural beauty of the flowers, as the white and green of the hydrangeas pop in contrast to the black background. Thus, Champney allows the flowers to become the objects of focus, and the viewer can appreciate the artist’s skill in bringing the flowers to life on the canvas. Benjamin Champney was also a relative of the artist James Well Champney, who was Smith College’s first art professor from 1877 - 1884, and has many paintings in this museum.
