Navez was a student of the Neoclassical painter Jacques-Louis David. Portrait of a Young Man, housed in a period frame, is believed to be the portrait of the son of M. Bernard, Director of the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, the Brussels opera house. (Carol Solomon-Kiefer, 2006)
