Label Text:
Boris Kustodiev is widely recognized for his distinctive style, which combines Neoclassicism and Art Nouveau with a deep interest in Russian cultural traditions. He sought to create a utopian vision of old provincial Russia—a world of prosperous merchants and cheerful peasants, bustling folk festivals, winter sleigh rides, and samovar tea parties. “For me, the real Kustodiev is a Russian fair, flashiness, 'popeyed' calico cloths, a wild 'brawl of colors', Russian towns and villages, with their harmonicas, gingerbreads, dolled-up girls, and dashing boys,” Alexandre Benois wrote in 1911.
