Originating from Yoruba, Kongo, and Fon religious practices, vodou maintains unique relationships with the Loa, or spirits. Haitian vodouisants have transformed their records of memory and forms of connection in diaspora, in the face of repeated attempts at forced separation from their history, their people, their truths. Haitian vodou flags invite the arrival of the Loa with specific colors, unique symbols, and movement. This flag, however, was likely made for tourists in the Bel-Air neighborhood of Port-au-Prince. It honors Djobolo Bossou, the bull Loa, who is recalled by the red cloth backing the flag and whose veve spirals across the center front of the flag. (Tacia Díaz, Class of 2019)
