One of the most celebrated Haitian artists, the self-taught Bigaud often depicted everyday life. Spending most of his time outside the capital Port-au-Prince, Bigaud was a keen observer of people in the countryside, of their work and traditions. Simply dressed, with no frills or flowers and a colorful headscarf, the artist has placed the fruit vendor squarely in the center of the canvas, her imposing presence towering proudly over her produce stand. Her stare seems to mesmerize the viewer as perhaps it did Bigaud himself. She possesses the moment and stands almost heroic, the Haitian goddess of the harvest.
