This luxurious sculptural marble clock from the workshop of Sormani, the famous French furnishings designer, came to the Mead from the collection of Mrs. Merriweather Post, and would have been placed on a mantel above the fireplace in a room modeled after French eighteenth- century drawing salons in the early twentieth century. It features Psyche holding a lamp and a sleeping Cupid, a Metamorphoses love story that regained popularity in the late eighteenth century and became a fashionable subject in art and interior decoration.
