Simpson undercuts a pattern of leaving black women’s stories untold by combining text and images in ways that open up and disorient possible meanings of a photograph. She made Partitions & Time as part of a project for Photographers + Friends United Against AIDS, an organization that raised funds for AIDS research and education. In Partitions & Time, Simpson presents a diptych, doubling a single photograph of a black woman who is turned away from the camera. The piece suggests the rhythms of patients and doctors—the subjectively slow, fast, and constant progression of illness and the medical professional’s prescriptive daily, nightly, and weekly time that tracks symptoms. But the statistics on the left suggest the unpredictability of a doctor’s estimate on the amount of time left in her patient’s life. (Julia Gill, Class of 2020)
