Label Text:
Artist's Process noted in catalogue: 1/8" high carbon steel was sheared to make plates of the right dimension and the edges were ground. Holes were drilled. The plate was carefully cleaned with a shot blaster and immediately sprayed with molten copper. The copper was applied very thinly and a finish was created after applying many layers. The final patina was created by manipulating oxidation through exposure to sunlight. The plate will continue to change color as it ages. The plate is intended to be removed from the book and leaned against a vertical surface. The holes are intended to be 'read' to indicate the number of the book in the edition. The method for reading the holes is as follows: there are 30 hole in each plate, of two different sizes, with ten in each third of the plate. Each third of the plate corresponds to a digit place (one, tens, hundreds) and the number of larger holes in each third determines the numeral filling that digit place.
