Label Text: Fab 5 Freddy and the Fabulous 5 were famed for painting the entire sides of New York City subway cars in the late '70s. Freddy basically founded the street art movement and bridged the New York graffiti, rap, downtown art, and punk scenes. In January '81, Blondie namedropped Fab 5 Freddy in "Rapture," the first rap video broadcast on MTV. In April '81, Freddy and Futura 2000 (who also created these Artifacts as part of Soul Artists) co-curated the graffiti show Beyond Words at the Mudd Club, alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat. The rest... is "Change the Beat": the world's most sampled song.
